Hair Pattern

4C Hair Care

4C hair has the tightest coil pattern of all the natural hair types. It shrinks the most, tangles the fastest, and dries out the quickest -- which means most of what changes about a 4C routine comes down to protecting the bend points in the strand and getting moisture in before it's sealed in with style.

What actually separates 4C from 4B and 4A

4C is the tightest pattern on the type-4 spectrum and often shows no visible curl at all when the hair is dry -- the coil only becomes obvious once it's stretched or wet. It also has fewer cuticle layers than looser patterns, which is why it's usually described as the most fragile texture, not just the curliest. Shrinkage reflects that tightness too: 4C hair can shrink by as much as 70-75% of its stretched length, more than any other pattern.

Why heavier products are the exception here, not the mistake

Advice that works for looser curls -- go light, avoid heavy butters, don't weigh the hair down -- often backfires on 4C hair. The same tight bends that cause the most shrinkage also make it the hardest pattern for scalp oil to travel down naturally, so 4C hair usually needs richer creams and butters layered over a water-based leave-in (the LOC or LCO method) just to reach a normal moisture baseline, not an indulgent one.
